I got tired of Diablo2, Morrowind and Oblivion. Since I was never a Warcraft fan, there really wasn't any doubt about what game I would be getting next.

I wanted to play WoW first, but didn't have money for subscription, and then I saw Guild Wars in some gaming magazine, I had to have it from the moment I saw it

This game is still my favorite game of all time, I played it for 3 years straight without playing any other game.

I first heard about it from a PC Gamer article and the no monthly fee caught my eye. I played the E3 demo back in 2004 and loved it and decided that I want to buy it once it is out.

I bought the game when it came out and played the hell out of it. I remember taking a day of work when Factions and Nightfall came out. Good times indeed.

I have not played in a while mainly because I played the hell out of it with almost every class ( the ones I did not play were assassin and paragon) and also due to lack of time. Real life can be evil sometimes taking one away from pretty games.

Because I was poor (at least to the extent one can be considered poor while still buying video games) and there was no monthly fee.

Fortunately, it turned out to be a good game, in addition to not having a monthly fee, so I kept playing after I wasn't poor anymore.

1. During the beta testing for GW Each weekend would end with some kind of deadly but funny event to remove you from the beta game. Gwen dancing through town and killing everyone will forever be one of the best gaming moments ever. Great gameplay, let me play the game I paid for without charging me for continued access, game easily updated, developers with a sense of humor and brave enough to leave blizzard to do something different!!!

2. Was sick of the Warcraft storyline and Blizzard being content with giving us the same old crap with a pretty new wrapper. It is no longer about the game and more about what idiotic stuff/rehash can they come up with to separate people from their money EX: Change the sex of your WoW character for $15 per change/Starcraft 2 will be broken down into 3 different games.

It mentioned competitive play that was 'skill based', which sounded more fun than d2 pvp at the time.

I snuck into the Korean Beta, and Pre-Searing was fun. So I bought it at the original release and loved it.

Having played several MMORPGs before, I always tended to get "out leveled" by my slightly obsessive friends - GW promised a low max-level, rapid level progression and an item system that would mean I'd be able to keep up. The elegance of the build system and PvP together with the storyline sealed the deal. Started at E34E and played avidly until a year ago or so. Good value for my money there!

bought guild wars after the first CU came out, played for a bit and went back to swg until the NGE hit, played a few other games and then remembered my GW account

D2 was getting boreing and stuff and my brother wanted to try out a new game and that lead us to trying out GW, me loveing it and my brother couldn't get into it and 4 years later i'm here and thats that.

I started playing because Pong was finally getting a little old after all these years of playing, so I figured I would move on.

Actually it is kind of funny why I started, my brother played WoW and I thought that sounds a little interesting, but did not want to pay $15 a month to play a game, so I forgot about it. A little while later I had a law professor who is one of the leading internet/ video game legal scholars in the nation, and he talked about WoW a lot. We suggested that we join some online community in order to see for ourselves first hand what he was talking about. So I looked around and saw that GW was free to play each month, so I bought Prophecies. The only way I could convince my wife to let me buy it was by telling her I would not buy any other of the expansions. Well that was over a year ago, and now I have all the campaigns and EotN and have 2 Prophecies accounts in the mail. I am hooked.

Guild Wars was on an open PvP weekend then, free to play for anyone that got a key in the site, and I tried it, and made an account, I loved it, so I got Prophecies. Later on, there was the Factions free preview too. After I saw that, I kept buying GW games.

And I would keep doing so if they released more before GW2.

I found many games, but all of them were the same: Kill, kill, kill, level up, one boring quest, stupid childish player 90 levels over my characters comes and kill it for no reason, rinse and repeat.

I found Guild Wars when it was on an open PvP even, free to play for anyone that got a key in the site, and I tried it, and made an account, I loved it, it was like a game designed for me. So I got it. I found the Special Edition that came with soundtrack.
Later on, there was the Factions free preview too. After I saw that, I kept buying GW games.

And I would keep doing so if they released more before GW2.

It was affordable and I mistook it for Lineage - nvm ~ these days it just competes for my attention with GTA IV, Guitar Hero and err.....oyeh, my gf.

Well in my case I've never played mmos before. I tried a 12 hours trial of Guild Wars, sooo... I started playing th efull version because i was really impressed from the 1st time i started it. Now it's a little more than 2 years

Great graphics, interesting professions (necro FTW), no monthly fee, and Best Buy had a special right around Christmas one year so Prophecies was only $10 one Saturday morning and my parents surprised me with it on Christmas morning. XD So it was doubly-free, at least until I started wanting Factions, etc. XD

No monthly fee & was happy with the ideas they promoted at the time about the game not being about time spend and grinding your character. *sigh* Well, at least the no monthly fee thing is still true...
